Painted in 2007 following a kayaking journey on the McKenzie River in the Northwest Territories. A towering, layered sky of storm cloud fills nearly the whole canvas above a still expanse of water. Narrow bands of low evening light break along the horizon, and a dark, forested point anchors the composition at left. The painting reflects Cooper's lifelong attention to northern light and weather, and his ecologist's eye for landscape.
