A vast, cloud-heavy sky dominates this study, with a low black spruce treeline anchoring the composition along the water’s edge — the kind of immense northern scale Chris encountered during our six-week road trip through the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska in 2006. This piece is believed to be a preparatory study for his larger finished canvas, “Aerial Leviathan, MacKenzie River,” working out the dramatic cloud forms and the sense of sheer expanse that defines the Mackenzie River landscape. The interplay of cool blue-grays in the clouds against the warm reflected light on the water shows Chris’s ecologist’s eye for atmosphere and weather patterns as much as his painter’s eye for composition.
