Joyce Tenneson

American

b. 1945

Joyce Tenneson is an accomplished American photographer best known for her mystical and sensual photographs of the female form. At once haunting, enigmatic, and evocative of dreams and forgotten memories, her painterly photographs celebrate human beauty while discovering new archetypes. In her portrait work, she uses the camera as a way of capturing the sitter’s presence rather than simply their likeness, revealing things about the person that are usually kept private. Tenneson’s work has been shown in over 150 exhibitions worldwide, and is part of numerous private and museum collections. Her photographs have appeared on countless covers for magazines such as: Time, Life, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, Premiere, Esquire and The New York Times Magazine. Tenneson is the author of seventeen books. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award, for best applied photography and was just elected as the Farnsworth’s Maine in America Award honoree for 2016. In addition, she has been named “Photographer of the Year” by the international organization, Women in Photography. A recent poll conducted by American Photo Magazine voted Tenneson among the ten most influential women photographers in the history of photography. Joyce lives and works in Rockport, Maine.
