About the artist

William Hogarth

British

1697-1764

London artist in 18th century, renowned for his portrait series, 'conversation pieces,' Hogarth studied under a goldsmith and produced engraved designs in 1710. His works pertained to satirical commentary on the contemporary norms. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic-strip like series of pictures called modern moral subjects, the best known being his moral series "A Harlot's Progress," "A Rake's Progress," and "Marriage A-La-Mode."
