About the artist

Martha Strawn

American

b. 1945

American photographer. Born in Washington DC, but grew up in Lake Wales, Florida. Received her B.A. in art from Mary Baldwin College and her M.F.A. in art from Ohio University. Also received her Basic Certificate from the Brooks Institute of Photography. Was named a Professor Emerita of Art at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Established the Time Arts program while she taught there. Helped found the Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film in Charlotte and has served on the board of the Society for Photographic Education, Friends of Photography and Davidson Land Conservancy among many other societies. Received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship as well as a Fulbright Scholarship to travel in India. Has exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston among other institutions. Lives and is active in High Springs, Florida.
