About the artist

Eugene Atget

French

1857-1927

Eugene Atget (1857–1927) was a French photographer known for his self-taught approach. Before starting his photography career, Atget worked as an actor, theater teacher, and painting teacher. He is renowned for his extensive documentation of urban architecture in Paris, a 30-year project known as ‘Old Paris,’ which opposed the modernization of the city.
