Born and raised in Los Angeles, Acuna attended UNLV for his MFA and graduated in 1997. He moved back to L. A. after graduation. A typical Acuna painting is structured around a small number of contrasting shapes. Usually a small, sharper form is crossing into a larger, rounder one. His surfaces are smooth, clear, and bright. “I have always had an influence of that L.A. painting [movement] Finish Fetish,” he told an interviewer in 2011. Acuna’s work was chosen for the 2007 group show Las Vegas Diaspora, along with a number of fellow alumni such as Tim Bavington and Victoria Reynolds. He has been exhibited in the United States and in Germany, where he is represented by Galerie Schmidt Maczollek in Cologne.
