Witnessing the species, ecosystems, and relationships being impacted by human choices.
This collection shines a light on endangered species profoundly impacted by human behavior and explores the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world. The series began approximately five years ago when I became increasingly aware of dramatic changes in animal populations across the planet. As I researched the challenges facing different species, I discovered a deeper connection with nature and confronted the anxiety of witnessing a world that felt increasingly out of balance.
Through these paintings, I explore the intersection of nature, human behavior, technology, climate change, and the fragmentation shaping our world. While the work addresses difficult realities, my use of symbolism, vibrant color, and unexpected visual relationships transforms these stories from narratives of loss into reflections of resilience, awareness, and hope.
To process global uncertainty while creating a sense of breathing space within both the artwork and myself, I intricately draw out sections in a lace-like formation. These delicate structures reveal the tension between fragility and strength, mirroring the vulnerability and resilience inherent within our planet and our relationship with it. Within these layered compositions, symbols connect cultures, objects, and moments in time, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living systems.
The fragmented shapes within the subjects often reference the patterns of urban expansion—land divisions, mapping, and architecture reshaping natural habitats and disrupting the ecosystems and communities that depend on them. These visual fragments reflect the consequences of separation while inviting reflection on the possibility of reconnection.
Ultimately, Vanishing Wild is not only about what is disappearing—it is about recognizing what remains connected. Like my textile-based Mending Confluence works, this collection explores the threads that bind all life together and the need to restore balance, compassion, and coexistence in an increasingly fragmented world.
