Edward Borein was an early Western artist. As a young artist he traveled throughout the West and Mexico working as a cowboy and recording his experiences. Borein moved to New York City in his thirties, where he entertained personalities such as Will Rogers, Charles M. Russell, Carl Oscar Borg and Buffalo Bill Cody in his studio.

In 1921 Borein returned to his native California, married, and set up a permanent studio in Santa Barbara. He produced etchings, watercolors, and drawings. After his death, Santa Barbara citizens produced Etchings of the West, a volume of work memorializing Borein. The Santa Barbara Historical Museum contains many of his works of art and personal objects, including Borein’s own collection of the best impressions of his etchings, and the collection has been developed into the Edward Borein Gallery.
