For a long time, I experienced a profound creative block with drawing, feeling a deep aversion to a medium that felt rigid and restrictive. This resistance was heavily tied to traditional, pencil-driven life studies and strict observational drawing methods. However, a recent shift completely unlocked its potential. By moving away from precise pencil work and stepping into looser, flowing mediums—like chunky graphite, charcoal sticks, and soft pastels—I fell in love with the process in an entirely new way. The inherent fluidity and immediacy of these materials dismantled my blocks, transforming drawing into a vital, generative gateway for further works and deeper studies.
Central to this artistic rebirth is a two-handed, bilateral drawing process focused entirely on pure line and symmetry. Executed with soft pastels and charcoal on thin printers newsprint, these pieces keep the mark-making raw and immediate. Choosing such humble, inexpensive materials is a deliberate act of liberation; it strips away the paralyzing pressure of perfectionism, allowing the tactile flow of the medium to take over.
Across all my current drawing practices, the act of making a mark operates as a real-time neurological grounding ritual. The mirrored movements of both hands working simultaneously create a sacred sanctuary where the physical body can step away from daily constraints.
