Samantha Anderson is a West Sussex-based artist who established her professional practice in 2021 following a lifelong commitment to creative observation. As a late-diagnosed autistic female who manages chronic health conditions, she navigates an art world that presents distinct physical and systemic barriers. Her response has been to build an adaptive, self-directed practice that serves as an essential space for sensory processing, self-regulation, and neurological grounding. Her work explores the landscape as a bridge between the physical world and the inner terrain of the imagination. Rather than painting a literal view, she translates her personal connection to specific places into a visual language of feeling and memory.
Crucially, this fluid way of working means she is not self-limiting because of her health; instead, it allows her to adapt her practice around her physical capacity on any given day. Her foundation is built upon a self-directed path of study, which includes training through West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. Her professional development is defined by a move into large-format works, where she has built a reputation for creating resonant spaces that invite deep viewer engagement
Committed to environmental responsibility, Samantha is a member of The Scrap Space, a creative reuse facility. She integrates a circular economy into her practice by sourcing discarded art materials and substrates from the facility for her work, while regularly donating her own surplus studio supplies back to the organisation to support other creators. Her work continues to evolve as she explores the intersection of local ecology and sustainable material possibilities.
Beyond her studio practice, Samantha is a committed advocate for inclusivity and sustainability within the arts. She serves as an Ambassador for Outside In, a national charity providing a platform for artists who face significant barriers to the art world. She is also an active member of the Adur Art Collective, contributing to the vibrant creative community of the Sussex coast.
