The Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius) is a striking black butterfly marked with bold, narrow yellow stripes running across its elongated wings, a pattern that gives it both its name and its role as a warning signal to predators. Native to Central and South America, Mexico, and the southern United States (where it serves as Florida's official state butterfly), it thrives in tropical hammocks, forest edges, and gardens. What sets this species apart is its diet: as caterpillars, Zebra Longwings feed on toxic passionflower vines, absorbing cyanogenic compounds that make both larvae and adults distasteful to predators, while as adults they're one of the few butterflies known to consume pollen in addition to nectar, a behavior that provides amino acids and contributes to their unusually long lifespan of several months compared to the mere weeks typical of most butterflies. They're also notable for their gregarious roosting habit, gathering in groups of a dozen or more on the same twigs each night, and for the slow, fluttering flight that lets them display their conspicuous coloring as they move through dappled forest light.
