The Tiger Longwing (Heliconius hecale), also known as the tiger heliconian, is a vividly patterned butterfly found throughout Central and South America, from Mexico down through the Amazon basin, recognized by its elongated wings marked with bold orange, black, and yellow patches that mimic a tiger's coloring and serve as a warning to predators of its toxicity. Like other Heliconius species, its caterpillars feed exclusively on passionflower vines, accumulating cyanogenic toxins that render both larvae and adults distasteful and protect them from predation, while adults extend their lifespan well beyond that of typical butterflies by supplementing nectar with pollen, gaining extra amino acids in the process. It inhabits tropical forest edges, clearings, and understory areas, favoring dappled sunlight, and is known for a slow, buoyant flight pattern that shows off its conspicuous warning coloration; it also participates in Müllerian mimicry complexes, sharing similar wing patterns with other unrelated but equally toxic butterfly species, which reinforces the predator-avoidance signal across multiple species at once.
