Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) is a small, stocky shorebird native to North America, breeding across Canada and the northern United States in wet meadows, bogs, and marshes, and wintering as far south as Central America and the northern parts of South America. It is characterized by its extremely long, straight bill used for probing deep into soft mud for invertebrates like earthworms and insect larvae, along with cryptic brown, black, and buff mottled plumage that provides excellent camouflage among marsh vegetation, and bold buffy stripes running down its back. Wilson's Snipe is best known for its dramatic aerial "winnowing" display during breeding season, in which males dive through the air, spreading specialized outer tail feathers that vibrate in the wind to produce an eerie, hollow winnowing sound used to attract mates and defend territory. Secretive and well-camouflaged, it tends to freeze and rely on concealment before erupting into a fast, zigzagging flight when flushed, a behavior familiar to hunters and birdwatchers alike. Once lumped together with the Common Snipe of Eurasia as a single species, it was split into its own species in 2002 based on differences in vocalizations, plumage, and tail feather structure, and today it remains a common, widespread, and popular game bird and birding target throughout its range.
