The Quiet After Thought began as part of a diptych with glass applied directly to the painted surface. The composition moves through blue teal white gray and deep navy with the main painted form sweeping diagonally across the canvas like a fractured current or frozen wing. The glass adds a sharp dimensional quality catching the light and giving the piece an edge that is both delicate and dangerous. During the finishing process epoxy was tested on the companion canvas as a way to coat and seal the surface. It sealed the work too completely making the glass disappear and removing the sharpness that gave the piece its presence. Because only one canvas received the epoxy treatment this piece remains as the version that shows what the glass was meant to do. The painting carries that history in its title. The Quiet After Thought is not just about what is visible on the surface but about the decision that came after: realizing that the edge the break and the exposed glass needed to remain part of the work. It holds a calm icy beauty but it also keeps the tension of something that almost got covered over.
