A monumental view of the pink granite shoreline of Georgian Bay, rendered across two panels spanning ten feet. Cooper began “Georgian Bay Sentinel” in 2004 — the same period in which he painted “Counterpoint of Curves” — drawing on the landscape he and Galina came to know intimately through kayaking trips along the bay’s rock islands and channels. The painting sat unfinished in his studio for several years while Cooper felt the composition remained unresolved. In the final months of his life, at Galina’s suggestion, he returned to complete it rather than begin a new large-scale work — making it one of the last paintings he finished before his death in June 2010. The piece captures the sculptural weathering of Canadian Shield granite, its warm rose and grey tones set against still water and open sky — a subject central to Cooper’s Georgian Bay series and the landscape that shaped much of his final years.
