Balboa Naval Hospital Established in 1921 on the grounds of Balboa Park, Balboa Naval Hospital now known as Naval Medical Center San Diego—quickly became a major military medical facility. It played a vital role during World War II, treating thousands of wounded service members. The hospital has since evolved into one of the largest and most advanced military medical centers in the U.S., continuing its legacy of service to Navy personnel and their families.
