Head down. Bill following the curve of its own neck, the way they do when they're not hunting, just resting on it. That long downcurved bill is the whole story of the bird, built for probing mud nobody else can reach.
The base carries the marsh the bird came from, wrapped around instead of laid flat. One side: cattails, a bird in flight low over water, stones breaking the surface. The other: pale shapes settled into the grass, eggs or stones, hard to say which at a glance. The bird sits above it the way these birds sit above everything, half in the water world, half out of it.
Built in slabs, the arched base thrown up around the scene before the bird went on top. Glaze layered wet into the low relief so the water holds more colour than the sky. Bill and eye finished in black oxide, everything else left in the soft sage of the body glaze, unglazed and matte where the form itself needed to read as feather.
