Underpass Mural (deaccessioned - vandalism) - 2018

Exterior Latex Paint

120 x 1500 in

Location: Deaccessioned

The mural lasted six months before being deaccessioned due to vandalism. The underpass experienced extensive graffiti prior to the mural being painted, which did not abate following mural installation. Code Compliance and Parks leadership advise avoiding underpasses for future art.

The mural design was created by artist Joe Ziegler, who generously donated his time for this project. Ziegler blocked in the design with black paint outlines, which were filled in with paint by volunteers participating in a company service project.

Approximately 45 Xcel Energy volunteers spent a half day working on the project, with additional community volunteers and City staff from Code Compliance, Parks, Recreation, and Arts and Culture providing additional support to set up, complete, and clean up the project.

The underpass mural received $500 from Excel Energy, with the remainder of the project expenses were funded by the City of Thornton Arts and Culture budget.

The artist's design included butterflies, farmland, hills, and trees.
