Rainbow Granite and Carnelian Granite

In the artist's own words: The act of sitting is a pause, a moment for observation and reflection. So seating elements can go beyond functional needs and stylistic convention to speak softly of the natural patterns and phenomena unique to the place, adding layers to the user’s experience. I am committed to a design process that is attuned to the natural and cultural systems that flow through a site. Intuition and analysis must flow together as the forms and space evolves. But my passion for materials and detailing takes me beyond the conventional role of the designer. I must be intimately involved with each project as it unfolds- I become maker as well as designer. This gives me the opportunity to hunt for stones of character, and then during fabrication, improvise to assure that their uniqueness is carried through in a sculptural presence."

Richard Hansen of Penrose created "Mountain Source, Prairie Place" of rainbow granite with a carved mountain edge that follows the distant ridge line to the west. The carnelian granite embodies the soil & strata of the prairie to the east.
