“When I began painting Phantom, three things seemed to be converging at this emotionally explosive nucleus. The pandemic had been killing people, fires created these motes of destruction, and chaos and rhetoric pinballed about by our nation’s leaders made me want to scream. I’d had enough. The disassociation from all events was the only thing that allowed me to keep my sanity. Phantom, with its wispiness floating across a mirage of structure was the culmination of what I’d felt at the time. I just wanted to sail away unawares of everything around me.”
