Wei Yan is a Chinese-born artist currently based in New Jersey, whose practice spans painting,
drawing, and installation. Her work explores the tension between individual experience and
broader social structures, examining how emotion, memory, identity, and collective narratives
are constructed, suppressed, and expressed.
Having grown up in an industrial city in Northeast China and later moved to Beijing, Wei Yan
now relocated to the United States, Wei Yan revisits personal history through a cross-cultural
lens. Her work transforms individual experiences into layered visual narratives, reflecting on
how people are shaped by social systems and cultural environments.
Before moving to the US, Wei Yan worked had been showing regularly across in many major
cities in China. Over the years, she has collaborated with numerous international brands and
institutions, including Ford Mustang, Adidas, Nike, Levi’s, Dolce & Gabbana, Nivea, Fiat,
Tmall, and Alibaba. Her projects have ranged from illustration and visual design to public art
and interactive installations. Notable works include a large-scale stainless steel installation
commissioned by Tmall in Chengdu Taikoo Li and a visual identity project for Ford Mustang in
China. These commercial collaborations have also informed her artistic practice, prompting
ongoing reflections on gender, identity, consumer culture, and systems of representation.
In recent years, Wei Yan has focused increasingly on large-scale drawing and painting,
integrating fragmented figures, symbolic imagery, and text to create immersive visual
environments. Her work investigates the relationship between individual emotions and collective
structures, as well as the ways people are shaped by and resist broader social forces.
Wei Yan was awarded the 2026 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Individual Artist
Fellowship in Painting.
