About the artist

Joel Shapiro

American

1941-2025

American sculptor. Shapiro is known for monumental steel structures that are defined by their gestural quality and their apparent defiance of gravity. His sculptures are influenced by other minimalist, post-modernist sculptors, however, he has stated that he is not a conceptual artist, but rather focuses on depicting emotional states. His work is influenced by his time spent in India.
