About the artist

Joseph Hirsch

American

1910-1981

American painter. Studied at the Philadelphia Museum School. As a young painter, he was awarded the Walter Lippincott Prize from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He became nationally recognized as a muralist for the Federal Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. He was a member of the American Academy-Institute of Arts and Letters and was also a founding member and treasurer of Artists Equity, a non-profit organization that supports the interests of artists. He was elected to membership in the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1967 and was a trustee of the Century Association. He taught at the Art Students League for 15 years. His art is rich in humanism and social commentaries that commemorate the everyday life.
