About the artist

Jane Freilicher

American

1924-2014

Jane Freilicher was an American painter born in New York City in 1924. She studied under Hans Hofmann and earned a degree from Brooklyn College and an MA from Columbia University. She was a member of the artist group, the New York School in the 1950s. Initially creating in Abstract Expressionism, Freilicher later became known for her representational depictions of urban and rural landscapes, in a style identified as painterly realism. Her works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She died in 2014.
