About the artist

William Eggleston

American

b. 1939

A photographer born in Memphis, Tennessee. He is known for his work with color transparency film, and is credited with expanding this form of photography to artistic legitimacy. He has been influenced by Swiss photographer, Robert Frank and French photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Eggleston was a professor at Harvard, and during this period discovered dye-transfer printing. His works are characterized by ordinary, every-day subject matter, and have featured images of objects such as Dr. Pepper machines, broken air conditioning units, torn posters, road signs and light bulbs. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at MoMA, Whitney Museum of American Art, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, amongst others.
