About the artist

Terry Frost

British

1915-2003

Sir Terry Frost was a British abstract artist who began painting in 1943 as a prisoner of in WWII. While in captivity at the Stalag 383 prison camp, he met another English painter, Adrian Heath. Heath inspired Frost to attend the Camberwell School of Art upon his return to England after capture. At Camberwell, Frost studied under paintersm Ben Nicholson and William Coldstream. His work took on the style of geometric abstraction, defined by bold patterns of shapes, such as overlapping half-circles, rectangles, and squares of bright colors. Frost later taught at institutions such as the University of Leeds and the University of Reading. His work is featured in collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh.
