About the artist

Louise Nevelson

American

1899-1988

Born in Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire, or modern-day Ukraine. Emigrated to the US with her family in the early 20th century. Began to study under Kenneth Miller and Kimon Nicolaides at the Arts Students League in 1929, and later went to Europe to study with Hans Hofmann in Munich, before visiting Italy and France. Returned to the US in 1932, and had her first solo exhibition in 1941. Began to experiment with found objects, a medium not well received at the time. Returned to this medium in the 1950s, finding inspiration in found wooden pieces, the works for which she eventually became most well-known. Works can be found all over the world.
