About the artist

Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt

Dutch painter and etcher, Rembrandt is considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers of European art. He attended the University of Leiden and later became an apprentice of Jacob van Swaneburgh, a Leiden history painter. Around 1625, he opened his own studio which heshared with Jan Lievens and began accepting students in 1628. His first commission was in 1629 by Constantijn Huygens for the court of The Hague. He married Saskia van Uylenburgh in 1634 and began working as a professional portraitist. Later in life, he suffered many tragedies such as the infant deaths of his son and two daughter. In 1642, his wife died from tuberculosis followed by financial troubles. Rembrandt became an art dealer in 1660, but still remained in poverty up until his death in 1669.
