About the artist

Claire Van Vliet

Canadian

b. 1933

Claire Van Vliet was a painter, printmaker, and draftsman. She was born in Canada in 1933 but spent a great deal of her childhood in England. She moved to California to live with her aunt, where she graduated from high school at 15. She then graduated from San Diego State College and earned her MFA from Claremont Graduate University. In 1955, she founded the Janus Press, which focused on both the age-old tradition of bookmaking and experiments with innovative book formats. In 1989, Van Vliet was awarded a MacArthur "Genius" award for her contributions to typography and the book arts.
