Born in New Jersey, Sonia Handelman Meyer lived for most of her life in New York City, where she worked various jobs. She took up photography after her sister gave her a camera and eventually Meyer joined the Photo League, where she became a student and active member before its demise in 1951. Her work epitomizes social documentary ideals with its focus on humanity in all its diversity. Now living in Charlotte, her work has become celebrated through numerous exhibitions and publications.
