American painter and teacher. Henri attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he studied under Thomas Anschutz. He traveled to Paris in 1888 to study at the Académie Julian, where he became interested in the work of Francois Millet and the Impressionist movement. Henri returned to Philadelphia in 1891 and began to teach at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. Henri was a leading figure of the Ashcan school along with other artists like George Luks.
