German painter and printmaker/engraver. Known for altar pieces that combines monumentality with tenderness. Unrivalled until Albrecht Durer, he was a master engraver of the late Gothic style that brought the art of engraving to maturity. Introduced painter’s understanding of contrasts and textures into engraving and focused primarily on Christian themes and subjects.
