Yvonne creates mixed media art that tells, vivid, textural stories that were mostly inspired by her experiences and memories of growing up in Detroit, MI during the 50s and 60s. Living in New York City for 22 years, she has new experiences and memories as additional inspiration for her art making.
Yvonne was first influenced by the array of fabrics, delicate tissue paper patterns, button and threads used by her mother who was an exceptional seamstress. Cutting and sewing doll clothes made from scraps of fabric given to her by her mother eventually led Yvonne to her chosen art form, mixed media collage and assemblage. Mixed media has been the ideal vehicle for Yvonne's creative expression for the many stories she shares in her art.
Yvonne may use wet and or dry media along with torn pieces of paper, scraps of fabric, photography, printmaking and clay. Her visual stories may be in the form of mixed media collage and assemblage, sculptural artist books, sculpture and weavings. Most recently, monotype printmaking has been added to the techniques she has embraced. There is absolutely no limit to the materials or techniques Yvonne will experiment with. She finds mixed media to be exciting, challenging, and always new.
Yvonne founded and co- curates the annual "Women Celebrate Women," exhibition. It's an all inclusive exhibition that honors Women's History Month. Coming up on it 5th year, It's an exhibition that invites New York based women artists from diverse backgrounds, generations and mediums to submit work that embodies the celebratory theme of the exhibition. 2024 celebrated the fourth installation featuring over 80 talented New York area women.
