I worked at a gallery in the shadow of Mount Mansfield for many years. During that time I was sure I had seen all the most paintable views of the mountain. Some views I saw painted a hundred times or more, sometimes a dozen times in a single year! So I was surprised when this very obvious and visible view caught my eye. I don't recall ever seeing a single painting of this particular composition. And while I am sure there are some, I am pleased to have what feels new and fresh for me.
I love the narrative story told by the strength of Mount Mansfield against the resilience of the aging barn.
I scouted it once and then a perfect break in the weather with deep blue skies and that beautiful alpenglow on the mountain gave me the opportunity I was hoping for. Oh that mountain, and that light! This is on the more detailed end of the spectrum for how I paint, and I think the clarity on the mountain accentuates its majesty.
