Eishi was born Hosoda Tokitomi (細田 時富) in 1756 to a samurai family that was part of the prestigious Fujiwara clan. He began as a painter, then moved on to printmaking, and back to painting again and made many Ukiyo-e scenes of beautiful women (bijin). His female figures were mainly depicted in standing positions; tall, slender, with elongated limbs and necks. Original woodblock prints by Eishi are considered rare and are held by many public institutions.

Eishi also used the personal names Min'nojō (民之丞) and Yasaburō (弥三郎). Most of his students are little remembered; the best known are Eiri [ja] and Eishō
