Studio: Ray's Farm from the collection of Temiskaming Art Gallery

This is an etching in which I used techniques such as aquatint, hard ground etching and soft ground etching. It is of a house near Sturgeon Falls. Unfortunately it no longer exists. It burnt to the ground some years ago.

Bruce Cull

As Bruce Cull says, he views the world through his own personal imaginative window. Bruce lives in a log home on Bay Lake in Latchford, Ontario. His works are reflections of the environment around him. He describes this relationship as trying “to impart the unique feeling of this area and the north. When you get out on the land there is certain wildness - not an intimidating wildness, but a sense of the power of the land. It is awesome, beautiful, and powerful”. There is a strong sense of this in his drawing, Ray’s Farm. The tree form and the wild sky shapes hint at the more expressionistic style of his other work. The artist says “My work does not transfer onto canvas or another surface with a visually correct image of the material world as our retinas perceive it, but rather it depicts a particular place, person or sentiment as experienced by all our senses. These experiences are poured through the filters of intellect and spirit. An essence of sensations is arrived at and then in a gut-wrenching solitary act, this essence is given a pictorial life. As a whiff or cedar, or the sound of waves lapping gently against granite a shore brings to mind an entire raft of evocations, so should my work engage each observer in their own particular emotions and memories.”

Bruce Cull was born in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario in 1952. He studied art at the Ontario College of Art for four years and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. He has won several awards and has exhibited at the Temiskaming Art Gallery since its second year and frequently at the gallery from then on. His work is in the collections of the City of North Bay and the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission.

Bruce shared some of his thoughts on being an artist in northern Ontario saying; "Northern Ontario is in my DNA and my soul, so that my eyes can only see through the filter of this unique environment." - Bruce Cull

Bruce Cull, selon ses dires, voit le monde par la fenêtre de son imagination personnelle. Bruce vit dans une maison de bois rond sur le bord du lac Bay à Latchford, Ontario. Ses tableaux sont le reflet de son environnement naturel. Il décrit cette relation comme étant une tentative « de communiquer l’impression unique qui se dégage de ma région et du nord. Lorsque vous vous enfoncez dans les terres, vous y ressentez une sauvagerie certaine — non pas une sauvagerie qui intimide, mais une sensation de sa puissance, qui est tout à la fois imposante, belle et vigoureuse. » C’est cette sensation qui se dégage du tableau Ray’s Farm [La Ferme de Ray]. Le tracé de l’arbre et les formes troublées du ciel annoncent déjà le style plus expressionniste de ses œuvres à venir. Ainsi se décrit l’artiste : « Mon œuvre n’ambitionne pas la transcription exacte sur la toile ou autre surface d’une image matérielle telle que le perçoit la rétine de l’œil, mais la représentation d’un lieu, d’une personne ou d’un sentiment captés dans leur particularité par tous nos sens. Ces expériences sont filtrées par l’intellect et le spirituel. Tout commence par une remontée à l’essence même des sensations puis, dans un acte solitaire surgi du fin fond de soi-même, l’accouchement en images de cette essence. Tels l’odeur du cèdre ou le clapotis de la vague contre le granit font surgir une chaîne ininterrompue d’évocations, ainsi en est-il de mon œuvre qui fait appel aux émotions et aux souvenirs propres à chaque spectateur. »

Bruce Cull est né à Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, en 1952. Il a étudié les arts à l’Ontario College of Art pendant quatre ans et obtenu son baccalauréat ès beaux-arts de l’Université de Calgary. Il a remporté plusieurs prix et exposé à la Galerie d’art du Témiskaming dès sa deuxième année d’existence, et fréquemment par la suite. Son œuvre figure dans les collections de la municipalité de North Bay et de la compagnie de transport Ontario Northland.

Être artiste dans le nord de l’Ontario. Le nord de l’Ontario est dans mon ADN et dans mon âme, de manière que mes yeux ne savent voir qu’à travers le filtre de cet environnement unique.
