The tapestry is a variety of techniques: knotting, crocheting, hooking and hand weaving. The fibres of wool are locally spun and the wool comes from the local Belle Vallée Wools.

About the artist

Lionel Venne

Lionel Venne’s paintings express rather than depict the northern landscape that he experiences. Watercolour, acrylics, collage, printmaking and textile arts are among the media he chooses for interpreting what he sees and feels. Lionel was born in Verner Ontario in 1936. His family lived in Matchewan briefly, then Windsor and finally settled in Leeville. Lionel got his BA in Humanities from Sacred Heart College in Sudbury and taught from 1956 to 1970 in Charlton, Uno Park, Brethour and Kenabeek. He lived in Leeville until moving to Elk Lake in 1983. Lionel has gained a repected reputation for his art across Canada and internationally. He has had numerous solo exhibitions both locally, in Toronto and as far afield as the Queen Charlotte Islands and Italy. His work is in many private, public and corporate collections in New York, other parts of the US, Canada and Australia among other places. He is represented by Fine Focus Gallery (West Hampton, New York), Madeline Jordan Gallery (Wincester, New York), Canvas & Clay Gallery (New Liskeard, Ontario), and Madelyn Galleria d'arte moderna e contemporanes "Fogolinio" (Trento, Italy).He has served on the Board of Visual Arts Ontario, the Northern Ontario Art Association (president for two terms), the Boreal North Sculpture Association (vice-president) and the Temiskaming Art Gallery.

In an interview with Heather Saunders in 2006 for the White Water Gallery, Lionel described his relation to his art. He said living in northern Ontario affected his artwork by eliminating distraction. He enjoys walking around and taking in the landscape. He never sketches or paints en plein air, but he does note intimately the details of the landscape like how the air smells or the direction that the wind blows.1

Being an artist in northern Ontario. I value the closeness to nature, the open skies, northern lights and the landscape in all its seasons.

Les tableaux de Lionel Venne sont plutôt l’expression que la transcription exacte de son expérience du paysage nordique. L’aquarelle, la peinture à l’acrylique, le collage, l’estampe et le textile appliqué sont parmi les disciplines qui lui servent de véhicule pour exprimer ce qu’il voit et ressent. Il compte plusieurs expositions en solo aussi bien en région qu’à Toronto et aussi loin que les îles de la Reine Charlotte et l’Italie. Son œuvre figure dans plusieurs collections privées, publiques et d’entreprise, entre autres à New York et ailleurs aux États-Unis, au Canada et en Australie. Il est représenté par la Galerie Fine Focus (West Hampton, New York), la Galerie Madeline Jordan (Wincester, New York), la Galerie Canvas & Clay (New Liskeard, Ontario) et la Galleria d’arte moderna e contemporanea Fogolino (Trente, Italie). Il a siégé aux conseils d’administration de Visual Arts Ontario, de l’Association des artistes du nord de l’Ontario (président pendant deux mandats), l’Association des sculpteurs Boréal Nord (vice-président) et la Galerie d’art du Témiskaming.

En 2006, dans une entrevue avec Heather Saunders pour la Galerie White Water, Lionel a décrit sa relation avec son art. Il dit que vivre dans le nord de l’Ontario a influé sur son travail en éliminant les distractions. Il aime à se promener çà et là en se laissant imprégner du paysage. S’il ne fait jamais ni esquisse ni peinture en plein air, cependant il notera intimement des détails comme l’odeur dans l’air ou la direction des vents.1

Être artiste dans le nord de l’Ontario. J’apprécie le rapport étroit avec la nature, les cieux grand ouverts, les aurores boréales et le paysage changeant avec les saisons.
