Hugh McKenzie (Zaagiidgeaway Gabo) is an Ojibway artist from Lake Temagami. His prints are images conveying spiritual meaning, animals and birds. Hugh was born on Bear Island, Lake Temagami. He says growing up on the family trap-line was the early inspiration for his interest in the land and nature. In 1967 Hugh went to work and live with his friend and fellow artist Benjamin Chee Chee in Hull Quebec. Together they produced work and sold it to the Canadian Indian Marketing Services. They did several art shows in Ottawa and Chee Chee produced a mural for Expo 67 that became well-known. Chee Chee died in 1976. Hugh continued to carry on his art, perfecting the sponge and stencil technique first developed by himself and Chee Chee earlier. David John Smith became Hugh’s first agent arranging tours and shows across Canada. Eventually Hugh returned to live and work on Bear Island. He is fully occupied with painting, music and designs for several Canadian companies. He also displays his work locally at his studio on Bear Island and at Temagami Welcome Gallery. In 2009 he completed a series of designs for the 2010 Olympics with traditional Native teachings. He also offers classes. He is currently taking Aboriginal Wellness studies at Canadore College.

Hugh says,"Part of myself goes into every painting. Art is a gift; I had no formal training other than that of watching my father [Donald] craft toys out of wood he got in the bush. I can still see and feel his hands at work - such inspiration from turning wood into lovable objects."1

Hugh McKenzie (Zaagiidgeaway Gabo) est un artiste odjibouais du lac Temagami. Ses pochoirs d’animaux et d’oiseaux sont empreints de significations spirituelles. Hugh est né à Bear Island sur le lac Temagami. Il raconte que le fait d’avoir grandi sur la ligne de trappe familiale a éveillé très tôt son intérêt pour sa terre natale et pour la nature. En 1967, Hugh est allé vivre et travailler avec son ami et confrère artiste Benjamin Chee Chee à Hull, Québec. Leur production conjointe était alors vendue aux Canadian Indian Marketing Services. Ensemble, ils ont monté plusieurs expositions à Ottawa et Chee Chee a même produit la murale d’Expo 67 devenue célèbre. Chee Chee est décédé en 1976. Hugh, pour sa part, a continué sa carrière artistique, perfectionnant la technique du pochoir et du tapotement à l’éponge que Chee Chee et lui avaient mise au point. David John Smith devient bientôt l’agent de l’artiste et organise des tournées d’expositions itinérantes qui le feront connaître par tout le Canada. Éventuellement, Hugh retournera vivre et travailler à Bear Island. De nombreuses entreprises canadiennes ont recours à ses talents en peinture, en musique et en conceptions graphiques, ce qui l’occupe à plein temps. Entre-temps, ses œuvres sont exposées dans son studio de Bear Island et à la Galerie Welcome de Temagami. En 2009, il terminait une série de conceptions graphiques inspirées de traditions autochtones pour les Jeux Olympiques de 2010. Il donne également des cours. Il suit présentement des études au Collège Canadore sur le mieux-être des autochtones.

« Une partie de moi-même se retrouve dans chacune de mes peintures, explique-t-il. L’art est un don; je n’ai eu aucune autre formation que l’exemple de mon père [Donald] façonnant des jouets à même du bois amassé en forêt. Je vois encore ses mains affairés à la besogne — je peux même les sentir — toutes inspirées à changer le bois en objets exquis. » 1
