Sylvia Montgomery is a contemporary artist whose paintings explore the color, light, and quiet rhythms of coastal life. Working in oil, watercolor, and pastel, she creates expressive interpretations of tropical landscapes, botanical forms, and wildlife that invite moments of reflection, ease, and quiet wonder.
Rooted in a family lineage of woodworkers and sculptors, Sylvia’s creative practice is grounded in a lifelong engagement with making. She holds both a BFA and MFA in Fine Arts and spent four decades building a successful career in Washington, D.C.’s consulting and brand strategy world before returning to painting with renewed focus in 2021.
Now based in Southwest Florida, Sylvia draws sustained inspiration from the region’s vivid color and understated beauty. Rather than documenting a place, her work seeks to capture how it feels—using expressive color, simplified forms, and atmospheric light to evoke a sense of calm, curiosity, joy, and connection. Through her Contemporary Coastal paintings, she invites viewers to slow down, look more closely, and rediscover the extraordinary within everyday moments.
