Painting is just the latest chapter in Sue White's life as a creative. Her creativity flourished in a home where her parents, a mom who was an accomplished seamstress and a dad who could make every day a celebration, gave Sue the gift of unconditional freedom to try whatever she could conjure. Her lifelong creativity, fueled by her love of learning, was focused on fashion, interior design and furniture design. As one friend said, “If you know Sue, you know that she can’t get away from her creativity. She wakes up thinking creatively.” Sue leaves her signature style upon whatever her attention touches. Her large scale abstract and nonobjective works are developed layer by layer, just like Sue styles her clothing and her home. She makes a mark, steps back and lets the painting speak to her; lets it tell her what it needs. Sue is a mark maker. Her work, full of rhythm and movement, is intuitive and unplanned. Her palette is usually warm, reflecting a love of reds, pinks, yellows and oranges or it is black, white and neutral. Open space, which frequently reveals the imperfect history of the piece, is important in Sue’s work and reflects the space that this only child not only craves but needs. Sue’s paintings are honest, unfiltered expressions of her joy, her energy and her unshakeable love of life.
