Stafford Wood is a pop artist and poet working in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Austin, Texas.
RECENT EXHIBITIONS
She was recently featured at The Hive Gallery in Bee Cave for her collage on vinyl collection called "Best Believe I'm still Bejeweled." Andy Warhol’s studio was famously called “The Factory” to reinforce the philosophy of his work: that fine art can be reproduced and needn’t be unique to be valuable, it can be based on forms and icons that are popular and can be produced in an assembly line fashion. "Bejeweled” is an homage to Warhol’s process and product. The “destruction of the sacred” by gluing art onto vinyl albums (that were sacred in the artist’s childhood home) gave her the same feelings of guilt as if she’d desecrated the American flag ala Mapplethorpe. And finally the glitter paint pen work evokes memories of 80s kids with stickers and markers drawing in a yearbook. The choice of Taylor Swift in the place of Marilyn Monroe was deliberate as an icon of modern beauty.
Her latest work in Taos involves paper-making and transformation in a series called "Taos Serendipity." Oil and water do not mix: they create a river of movement that can be captured in the moment, but is different than the paint floating on the water. It's impossible to hold a moment in time without transformation. With imagination and precision, the moment changes into a representation of Taos. This work starts with oil, water, paper, scissors and glue and turns into a village of transformation and returning to nature, soil and air.
