“The work represents a transitional period between symmetrical pieces which came before it and pieces following which were not based on repetition for their execution. To be more precise, prior to this piece, my work was made by the adding of shapes, one over-lapping the other until the image was filled out. The image was always frontal and flat and symmetrical and usually reminiscent of architectural structure. In fact, they were very much “built.” They were also black and white or black and silver reflecting my involvement with light as produced by high-contrast. The piece coming after the period of Northern Drawing #2 did away with the limitation of the earlier work. What I did keep was the central image and the interest in black and white. If there was repetition it was kept to a ground upon which an image was constructed.”
