Satya Keyes is a California-based mixed-media artist whose road into visual art has been anything but orderly, or obedient. He began as a ... what? Perhaps a writer, a poet. Songs came. All to disappear into the air. That's where and when he started meditating. Years flowed and so he became a teacher, and practitioner of healing arts, gathering influences from literature, depth psychology, spiritual inquiry, Zenman chops, TaoMan chucks, horses, all tolling a lifelong reminder to listen to the heart. It tolls for thee. Art came not as a career plan but as another language insisting on being spoken.
Satya’s work moves freely through painting, collage, charcoal, pencil, oil pastel, ink, and whatever else refuses to stay politely in the drawer. His images often develop through layering, revision, accident, and return. One medium begins the conversation, another interrupts, and eventually the artwork gets the last word.
Now, Satya brings these many strands together with a clarity that younger ambition might only have gotten in the way of. His growing work with heritage mustangs at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary and Conservation has given his horse-centered imagery a living ground and a deeper historical urgency.
But he is not limited there. The natural world includes everyone. People, plants, animals, oceans, skies and the Beyond. He is an emerging artist in the most literal sense: still emerging, still surprised - beginner's Mind and old enough to know: that the chattering drunken monkey-mind of society's road is probably overrated.
