Lois Ehlert is an artist and author who was born in Beaver Dam Wisconsin in 1934. Born to a woodworker and a sewist, her artistic creativity was encouraged from an early age. Ehlert received a scholarship to the Layton School of Art (1957) and later took a class at the University of Wisconsin which taught her new ways to construct books. These educational experiences combined with her rich artful upbringing helped to model a style that she would continue to use her books and illustrations for years to come. Her books and art are dynamic and unique, presenting illustrations using found objects, fabrics and cut outs.
