This group of paintings have been completed late 2022 through 2023.
I have been exploring organic forms, shadow and atmospheric luminosity my deep sensitivity to color and its qualities of mood. some are full of dynamic movement, others a study of contrast. Taken as a whole one sees a study of universal order versus happenstance experienced as growth and change.
These works draw from the deep and rich palette of emotive power, contrasting light and color to call forth the transcendence of light and the fragility of form. Blending dark umber and Prussian blue creates a “black” that is an exploration of depth and richness of color, rather than its absence. Each piece examines the relationship between dark and light, between shadow and reflection, between inner quiet light and outer brash light.
This honors what cannot be placed in words – an exploration of the immaterial realm, infinity, and formlessness – creating a still point within an ever-changing world. These paintings invite the viewer to connect with and experience their own inner emotions. They present a visual metaphor of our shared “beingness”, and invite us to experience the transitory nature of life, constancy of the great sweet darkness and warming light, to which we are continually drawn, and from which we continually move away.
A collection of earlier work being offered for sale at an Open Studio at 802 Partridge Ct Hockessin DE on 10/21 and 10/22 and with a pre-sale discount to collectors.
The paintings in this series are a more direct representation of everyday experiences of the sky or clouds or water. I had become aware of a drive within me to see if I could capture the impact of clouds and light on our psyche. These invoke a sense of timelessness, and tap into our collective consciousness via common experiences. I have chosen to reconstruct familiar spatial appearances, informed by the common experiences of weather and environment in order to evoke shared human emotions such as peace, joy, sorrow, and ecstasy and to engage the emotions of the viewer directly. The reaction to sunny days or rainy days is universal.
People who have purchased work from this series relate to me that when they come across their painting in their house, they are able to suspend their regular internal chatter and find respite. "It is like living near a beach," someone told me. Depending on the time of day and the way the light hits the painting I can see something new whenever I pass by the canvas."
This series continues the study of dynamic flux explored in the "Celestial Musings" paintings. These paintings honor what cannot be expressed in words, evoking a sense of the immaterial realm, infinity and formlessness. Color, which moves forward and then pulls back, combines with repeating geometric or organic forms to create pictures that are both full of movement and full of stillness. In the geometric paintings, planes which are fractured by angles and dissecting lines, are manipulated as they fall away; the eye is led into internal structures and then back out to the external face of the canvas. Order is found among the disorder. The resolution is found in an inner chamber of silence in each painting.
