Rebecca Silvers is a painter and versatile multimedia artist. Her work embodies the modernist approach that each process has something unique to offer, and has grown out of techniques ranging from ancient printmaking and mandalas, to cutting edge video software. She has developed strengths, such as building rhythm in visual storytelling, and applied them to her first love, oil painting. Visual expression had been a favorite activity since early childhood but once she took her first oil painting class at age sixteen she was hooked.
Rebecca's current abstract expressionist paintings are characterized by bright, bold, organic shapes, a feeling of movement, and noticeable texture. Scratching into layers as they dry, and slowly emphasizing impulsive marks to reveal a kind of balance in the chaos, seems to be a thread through this collection. Compared to earlier work, it is less referential, more honest and perhaps stark, but invites the viewer to reflect in a deeply personal way.
Her design and illustration has appeared in books, video, textiles, and on the internet for clients such as McGraw-Hill, Penguin, Nightshade Books, Digital Promise, Center For The Collaborative Classroom and KQED. She animated several short films including Solace written by Aaliyah Bilal, a music video for Yea-Ming and The Rumours, Going It Alone: A Guide to Being Single in a Pandemic written by Brent Rose. She was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and was trained at the Parsons School of Design, the San Francisco Art Institute, California College of Arts and Crafts, Bay Area Video Coalition, and U.C. Santa Cruz. She lives in Oakland, California.
