I made Color Thoughts to deliver a message: There is no “normal” brain or way of thinking. I want this to highlight the complexity of the brain, and send a message to people with certain neurologic conditions and malformations: Brains aren’t broken, they just work differently.
When I had a stroke back in 2020 because of my Arteriovenous Malformation, I thought my brain would be broken until I died. But now that I have healed and adjusted to my new disability, I no longer see it that way. In a way, I’m proud. It was this sudden change in my life that led to me pursuing art.
I wanted to incorporate nods to other rare diseases, neurological conditions neurodevelopmental conditions, and disabilities. The awareness ribbons, butterflies, glowing symbols, lightbulbs, and gears all represent this. The various other symbols represent the functions and sheer complexity of the brain. It is important to know that even the greatest scientists have yet to fully understand the brain and how thoughts, feelings, and memories form, and we may never will. That’s the beauty of the brain, and this artwork only manages to capture a fraction of it.
