The salt air of rural Newfoundland and Labrador has taken its toll on this wooden structure. Once painted white, the siding now peels and grays with age. A weathered red frame outlines the door and a solitary window above it—worn gestures of pride that still mark the homeowner’s entrance. On the right, a rusted heating oil tank slouches inside a battered wooden frame. It’s still working.
Salted and Standing captures a dwelling—and a way of heating it—that persists despite decay. The building and its energy source are both visibly past their prime, yet neither has been replaced. This image reflects more than wear; it speaks to economic limits, to energy systems that outstay their era, and to homes that persist even when repair is no longer affordable. Renewal, in some places, is not a choice—it is a luxury.
