Peter Callas is a ceramic artist based in Belvidere, New Jersey, whose work is distinguished by a mastery of large-scale, wood-fired ceramics developed over more than five decades. He earned his BFA from the University of Puget Sound in 1973 and went on to a residency at the Archie Bray Foundation, where his engagement with clay deepened. Extended travel and study in Japan introduced him to Anagama kiln firing, a technique that has remained central to his practice ever since.

Callas maintained a 23-year working collaboration with the influential ceramicist Peter Voulkos, a relationship that shaped his approach to form and process. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Gotoh Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery, and Sèvres — Manufacture et Musée Nationaux. In 2021, his work was featured in the Met's exhibition Shapes from Out of Nowhere.

He is the recipient of two Pollock-Krasner Foundation fellowships (2018 and 2021) and a Windgate Foundation grant. His life and work are the subject of the documentary CALLAS: Life on Fire, which premiered at Cannes in 2022. Callas continues to work and exhibit from his studio in New Jersey.
